“Oh, it’s terribly boring in the summer … there’s just nothing to do.” This off-hand complaint, uttered in 1953 by a resident of Newport, Rhode Island, is what inspired Boston jazz club owner George Wein to transform the quiet New England resort town into a showcase for some of the biggest talents in jazz and folk music. When he created the Newport Jazz Festival and, later, the Folk Festival, Wein couldn’t have imagined that he was drawing the blueprint for countless music festivals to come—from Woodstock to Bonnaroo and beyond.

Sandy Paton of Folk-Legacy Has Died

Sandy died last Sunday, July 26, at the age of 80. He'd been dealing with emphysema and more, and had been weakened by the recent and tragic death of his grandson Kaelan who had jumped into Housatonic rapids to save another boy, but lost his life in the saving.

Country Music at The White House

Worlds of Country Music Fill a White House Bill

Under the crystal chandeliers of the East Room of the White House, it was a big night for twang and heartache.

The White House Summer Music series presented “A Country Music Celebration” with the bluegrass-rooted singer and fiddler Alison Krauss, the songwriter and guitarist Brad Paisley and the country singer Charley Pride, all members of the Grand Ole Opry.

“I know folks think I’m a city boy, but I do appreciate listening to country music,” President Obama said as he introduced the concert. “It’s about folks telling their life story the best way they know how.”

The program was Web cast at whitehouse.gov and videotaped for the Great American Country television network. It was by no means the first country performance at the White House, said the M.C., the Nashville radio patriarch Eddie Stubbs. That was by the Coon Creek Girls, for Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939.
